Our library was selected as the 2004 winner of the American Association of School
Librarians' School Library Media Program of the
Year Award, sponsored by the Follett Library Resources.
The library/resource center serves the diverse populations of two of
Boston Public Schools’ pilot high schools: Boston
Arts Academy and Fenway High School.
Funded by a grant from the Harcourt General Charitable Foundation, the library
opened in September 1998 in the newly renovated Ipswich Street building both
schools share. In addition to its function as a school library, it also serves
as The Boston Symphony Orchestra Education
Resource Center, supporting teachers of the arts throughout Massachusetts. The
Resource Center was developed with funding from the U.S. Department of
Education.
In addition to its exemplary collection of
curricular materials, the library houses a rich fine arts collection that
includes books, periodicals, recordings, art prints and posters, slides and video tapes. The collection includes extensive literature, history
and multicultural materials, as well as over 500 classical music CDs on loan
during the school year from the Tanglewood
Music Center. A collection of over 5,000 slides donated by the Museum
of Fine Arts is available for loan to the public.
Students and teachers use the library extensively throughout the
day, beginning with its opening at 8 a.m. The library is open until 5:00 p.m.
Monday-Thursday, until 4 p.m. on Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
The Boston
Symphony Orchestra’s education office often hosts professional development
workshops in the resource center on Saturdays. The library/resource center is
also open on weekday mornings throughout the summer. These hours serve the
Fenway and BAA students and teachers and make the collection available to arts
educators throughout the state.
Educators from Massachusetts are welcome visit
the BAA/Fenway Library and BSO Education Resource Center to borrow
materials during our regular hours of operation. Please call ahead during school
vacations and on Saturdays to make sure the library is open.
